Although AKI markedly contributes to mortality in sepsis, its diagnosis is frequently delayed due to limitations of current biomarkers of renal impairment. Neutrophil-gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has been demonstrated to be a biomarker of early AKI.
